In a disclosure that sent shock-waves through Nigeria’s literary and academic communities, Nigerian Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka revealed that his non-immigrant US visa has been revoked by the United States Consulate General, Lagos.

According to the letter he received  dated 23 October 2025  the action was taken because “additional information became available” after his visa was issued.

“I have no visa; I am banned, obviously, from the United States,” Soyinka told the press in a media session in Lagos.

Professor Soyinka presented details of the official correspondence, which specified that his B1/B2 visa  a standard business/tourist classification  had been cancelled pursuant to U.S. Department of State regulations.
He noted with surprise that the revocation letter did not cite any specific offence or misconduct on his part.

“I don’t have any past criminal record or even a felony or misdemeanour to qualify for the revocation,” he said.

The timing of the revocation has prompted speculation about its motives. Professor Soyinka publicly renounced his U.S. Green Card in 2016 in protest of what he described as the divisive politics of the Donald Trump administration.

He also declared refusal to attend a requested re-interview by the U.S. Consulate in Lagos  a development previously reported as part of a wider re-validation exercise of B1/B2 visa-holders from Nigeria. According to Global Hints

While the visa-revocation may relate to broader changes in U.S. visa policy, including reduced validity and increased scrutiny for Nigerian applicants, Soyinka indicated that he was unaware of any personal wrongdoing that would prompt such action.

Implications for U.S.–Nigeria Relations and Soyinka’s Work

Nigerian Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka says US revokes his visa- Global Hints

The revocation of Soyinka’s visa has implications beyond the individual: it raises questions about the treatment of prominent Nigerians under U.S. visa policy, especially given Soyinka’s international stature as a playwright, poet and professor. The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has not publicly commented on the case at this time. Soyinka emphasised that the ban will not halt his voice or his engagements:

“If you want to see me, you know where to find me,” he quipped, underlining his readiness to continue his work from home soil.

Professor Soyinka said he will not apply for a fresh visa, signalling that the revocation is effectively permanent in his view.  He also urged those expecting his presence in the U.S.  whether for lectures or other engagements  to redirect their focus, noting that he remains in Nigeria.

Observers will watch whether this incident triggers any diplomatic exchanges or policy review between Nigeria and the U.S., particularly given the sensitive nature of visa-norms and the symbolic weight attached to a Nobel laureate’s exclusion.

In his own words: “Silence in the face of prejudice is as dangerous as the act itself.”

While the ban may seek to limit his physical presence overseas, it cannot silence the voice of Wole Soyinka  and in that, the world may yet find a powerful message.
