The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing another round of internal turbulence after its National Working Committee (NWC) suspended and recommended the expulsion of several high-profile party members, including Minister Nyesom Wike, former Governor Ayo Fayose, and Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
This comes amid sharp disagreements within the party’s leadership, according to multiple credible sources. Vanguard News

The move against Anyanwu has drawn in heavierweights like Nyesom Wike and Ayo Fayose. Opposition lawmakers and party insiders are calling for their removal, accusing them of undermining the PDP’s cohesion.

In a recent statement, a coalition of 40 lawmakers warned that the PDP risks mass defections if Wike and his allies are not disciplined.
The group says these figures are threatening the party’s unity with what they describe as
“greedy politics backed by Abuja plots.”
At an emergency meeting in Abuja, the PDP NWC approved a one-month suspension for Anyanwu, who served as the party’s National Secretary, as well as for the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, and other officials.
During the suspension period, the affected individuals will cease to function in their official roles, and a disciplinary committee has been tasked with investigating the accusations.

Meanwhile, a National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) led by former foreign minister Tom Ikimi has recommended the expulsion of Samuel Anyanwu from the PDP.
According to the committee’s report, Anyanwu allegedly engaged in “anti-party activities,” including the involvement of security agents to influence party operations at its national headquarters.

Unsurprisingly, Wike’s supporters have pushed back hard. Senator Anyanwu, a close Wike ally, insists that the disciplinary process is politically motivated. He told Vanguard that his ouster attempt stems from his insistence on “due process” and his loyalty to Wike.
The NDC’s recommendation, he argues, is flawed and should be rejected. Other members of the Wike faction have labelled the disciplinary committee’s actions as a “proxy war,” aimed at weakening their wing of the party.
Unity under threat: This escalation comes amid rising tension within the PDP, raising the spectre of a broader party split.
Electoral risk: With key governors, lawmakers, and strong-arm players like Wike and Fayose in conflict with the NWC, the PDP’s base could fracture in critical states.
Power play intensifies: The public show of disciplinary action may be a signal from the party’s top brass to reassert control ahead of upcoming elections.
As the PDP turns the screws on Wike, Fayose, and Anyanwu with suspensions and possible expulsions, the crisis at its core deepens. One lawmaker’s warning seems especially telling:
“Their expulsion is not negotiable.”
Whether this marks a turning point toward reform or further division remains to be seen.
