Nigeria Under Fire: Nicki Minaj Supports U.S. Move Over Alleged Christian Persecution

American rapper Nicki Minaj has publicly commended former U.S. President Donald Trump for designating Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) amid an escalating crackdown on religious freedom.

The “Super Bass” star took to X to express her gratitude and urge public acknowledgement of the crisis.According to  Vanguard News

In her post, Minaj wrote:

“Reading this made me feel a deep sense of gratitude. We live in a country where we can freely worship God. No group should ever be persecuted for practising their religion. We don’t have to share the same beliefs in order for us to respect each other.’’

She added:

“Numerous countries all around the world are being affected by this horror & it’s dangerous to pretend we don’t notice. Thank you to The President & his team for taking this seriously. God bless every persecuted Christian. Let’s remember to lift them up in prayer.”

Trump’s move to list Nigeria as a CPC followed his call-out of the “existential threat” facing Christians in Nigeria, citing large-scale attacks by radical Islamist groups.

 The CPC designation is reserved for nations where the government is seen as tolerating

“systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom”.

Responses in Nigeria have been mixed. While some citizens believe the move is long overdue, others view it as geo-politically motivated.

According to The Whistler, comments ranged from acknowledging the killings of Christians in the Middle Belt to suspecting U.S. interests at play.

Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Nigeria) emphasised that the government remains “committed” to combating violent extremism and protecting all citizens regardless of religion.

Minaj’s involvement marks an interesting cross-over between entertainment and global human rights discourse.

Her voice added a cultural lens to a geopolitical move, reminding audiences that celebrity platforms are now part and parcel of international debate.

By saying it is “dangerous to pretend we don’t notice”, she highlighted the risk of silence amid human rights violations.
