Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who are contemplating defection to exit the party now, stressing the need for a focused and united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Saraki’s remarks come in the wake of the defection of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and other influential PDP figures to rival parties. He emphasized that the earlier the party sheds those intending to leave, the better its chances of repositioning and playing the role of a strong and credible opposition.
“My view is that those who want to leave the PDP should leave now and let the rest of us who want to stay concentrate on rebuilding the party and refocusing it to play the role of a viable opposition that will provide a better alternative for the good people of Nigeria,” Saraki said.
He underscored the importance of having a vibrant opposition to sustain public confidence in democratic governance, warning against the dangers of a one-party state.
“A one-party state as being disingenuously designed by some people will not augur well for a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-cultural, multi-religious, and highly diversified society like ours. It is even more dangerous when we eliminate alternatives and make people hopeless,” he said.
Saraki concluded by reiterating his commitment to working with other party loyalists to re-strategise and reposition the PDP as a beacon of hope for Nigerians.
