According to investigators, the scheme took place between 1995 and 1998. During that time, Nwude allegedly impersonated the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, presenting himself as a powerful government official to gain the trust of foreign investors.

Using this false identity, he convinced Nelson Sakaguchi, a director at the Brazilian bank Banco Noroeste, to invest in what was described as a new international airport that would be built in Abuja.

The bank executive believed the project was legitimate and approved payments totaling $242 million, with about $191 million transferred in cash while the rest accumulated as interest and additional payments. However, the airport project never existed.

Investigators noticed a huge amount of money sitting in offshore accounts that had no clear explanation, which triggered a multinational investigation involving authorities from several countries.

The case later became known as one of the largest “419” fraud schemes ever recorded.
