Nigerian dancer and singer, Korra Obidi, has again found herself at the centre of controversy after a viral video showed her twerking at the gravesite of Afrobeat icon, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, during a recent visit to the Kalakuta Museum in Lagos.

The clip, which surfaced on social media over the weekend, generated heated reactions from Nigerians, with many describing the act as “disrespectful” and “needlessly provocative.”

The footage captured Obidi dancing energetically including twerking  directly in front of the tomb, while Seun appeared to watch without objection , the video immediately sparked a wave of mixed reactions online as Nigerians questioned the cultural and moral appropriateness of the display.

Korra Obidi Defends Her Action

In the video posted on her Instagram page, Korra defended her actions, insisting that the gesture was a form of “tribute” to the late Afrobeat pioneer.

She said:

“We all know one thing Baba loved was a woman with gyrating hips. I decided to pay homage in my own little way. This is for Baba.”

The dancer maintained that her tribute was in line with Fela’s flamboyant personality and lifestyle, adding that the late musician lived unapologetically and celebrated freedom of expression.

Seun Kuti’s Response: ‘I Was Happy With the Tribute’

Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, whose presence in the video raised further questions, has reportedly dismissed the backlash surrounding the moment.

Seun said he saw nothing offensive in the dancer’s actions, noting that he understood her intentions.

He was quoted as saying:

“I was happy with the tribute. I don’t know why people are angry. Baba knew what he liked, and we all know too.”

Seun’s reaction has further sparked debate, with many Nigerians questioning whether the family’s approval should influence public judgement on the issue.

Nigerians Split Over Cultural Boundaries

While some Nigerians defended Korra’s actions, arguing that Fela was known for embracing art, dance and nonconformity, others insisted that a gravesite remains a sacred place, regardless of the individual’s personality when alive.

A social media user wrote:

“Fela loved dance, yes. But there’s a line. A grave is a place of rest. This was unnecessary.”

Another argued that the tribute fit the late legend’s persona:

“If Fela were alive, he would probably have laughed. He lived a life of freedom.”

Analysts say the situation remains a hot topic because it touches on deeper issues  cultural values, boundaries in entertainment, and how Nigerian icons should be honoured. While Fela was known for breaking rules, many believe death and gravesites should remain untouched territories.
