In a move signalling renewed focus on migration and national identity, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that 170 foreign nationals have lodged applications to acquire Nigerian citizenship. The disclosure was made by the Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo, Minister of Interior, during a session of the Citizenship Advisory Committee in Abuja.

The Minister emphasised that citizenship in Nigeria is not automatic or guaranteed  but rather a privilege that must be earned through rigorous vetting.

“Anyone who holds the citizenship of our great country must be a person of strong character and impeccable integrity, reflecting the true values of Nigeria,” he declared. The Guardian

The review process is being handled by the Citizenship Advisory Committee, which consists of senior representatives from the ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to the Minister, each of the 170 applicants will undergo background checks, assessments of character and contribution to national development, as well as verification of legal residency and other statutory requirements.

Why the Government is Pursuing This Now

The move comes at a time when Nigeria is intensifying its efforts to ensure national integrity, strengthen border control and improve legal migration pathways. Experts note that under the Nigerian Constitution, citizenship by registration or naturalisation is permissible  but only under strict conditions.

By publicly stating the number of applicants and emphasising integrity and character, the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu seeks to reassure Nigerians that citizenship will not be granted without thorough scrutiny.

As Minister Tunji-Ojo put it:

What Applicants Must Demonstrate

In line with legal provisions, those applying for citizenship through registration or naturalisation must:

  • Be of good character and show a sustained desire to reside in Nigeria.

  • Possess a history of residence (and sometimes contribution) in Nigeria for the requisite period.

  • Renounce other citizenships (in most cases) if required by law, and take an oath of allegiance.

The Minister reiterated that only applicants who meet “strong character and impeccable integrity” criteria will be forwarded for approval.

For Nigeria, this process underscores two key policy directions: enhancing national security by ensuring only eligible foreigners become citizens; and positioning the country as a destination of interest for individuals from around the world who meet the high-bar requirements.

For the applicants, the public announcement raises awareness of the seriousness and transparency expected in the process. It also signals that the government intends to keep the list manageable and selective rather than opening the doors broadly.
