The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it delayed the English Language Paper 2 in the ongoing 2025 WASSCE to prevent question leakage.
The paper, which was scheduled for earlier in the day, was not written until Wednesday evening, leaving thousands of candidates across the country confused and frustrated.
In a statement on Wednesday night, WAEC admitted it had to hold off on the exam due to what it described as “challenges” in securing the paper.
“While maintaining the integrity and security of our examination, we faced considerable challenges, primarily due to our major aim of preventing leakage,” said Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC.
WAEC said it successfully prevented any leak, but acknowledged the move disrupted the exam schedule.
“In spite of our best efforts, we encountered logistical hurdles, security concerns, and socio-cultural factors that negatively influenced our operations,” the council said.
WAEC apologised to students, parents, and schools, promising to do better.
“We recognise the importance of timely conduct of examinations and the impact of this decision… and we sincerely apologise,” the statement read.
Despite the backlash, WAEC says it remains committed to upholding high standards and preventing malpractice throughout the exam season.
