Nigeria Launches Scholarship Programme for Caribbean Students to Study in Nigerian Universities
In a significant move to strengthen educational ties between Nigeria and the Caribbean, President Bola Tinubu has unveiled a new scholarship programme aimed at students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). This initiative, set to commence in the upcoming academic year, will provide opportunities for OECS nationals to pursue higher education in Nigerian universities.
Strengthening Educational Ties
During a joint press conference in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of fostering deeper connections between Nigeria and the Caribbean. He stated, “The Organization of Eastern Caribbean States is very close to us in Africa. We are moving forward to facilitate business and education opportunities, build capacity, and explore other areas such as agriculture and food security. We won’t drop the ball.”
The scholarship program is part of a broader effort to enhance cooperation in education, trade, and development between Nigeria and the OECS. A joint implementation committee comprising representatives from both Nigeria and OECS member states has been established to finalize the modalities and ensure the timely rollout of the scholarship scheme.

Facilitating Travel and Collaboration
In addition to the scholarship program, President Tinubu revealed that discussions are underway to grant visa waivers for holders of diplomatic and official passports from OECS countries. This move aims to facilitate easier movement and foster greater collaboration between the two regions. Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre of Saint Lucia welcomed the scholarship initiative, describing it as “a timely and practical expression of solidarity.” He confirmed that OECS students selected under the program would commence their academic programs in Nigeria with the next school calendar, in line with President Tinubu’s directive.
A Vision for Enhanced Cooperation
Earlier in the day, President Tinubu addressed a special joint session of the Saint Lucian Parliament, outlining his vision for a renewed partnership between Nigeria and the Caribbean bloc. The scholarship scheme and other bilateral initiatives mark part of Tinubu’s broader push to deepen ties between Africa and the Caribbean. This initiative reflects Nigeria’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and providing educational opportunities to students from the Caribbean, thereby contributing to the development of both regions.
