Nnamdi Kanu’s Release: Abia State Gov Confirms Step to Secure IPOB Leader’s Freedom

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has confirmed that he has activated a set of diplomatic and political steps aimed at securing the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The governor disclosed this following the recent judgement of a Federal High Court in Abuja, which sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment.

The governor made it clear that the next phase of engagement has officially begun now that the court has concluded its ruling.

He stressed that the pathways toward Kanu’s release were discussed months ago and were only awaiting the completion of judicial processes. According to Daily Post

“We Already Have an Understanding” — Otti

Governor Otti revealed that he had previously entered into discussions with federal officials, where certain understandings were reached regarding a possible political resolution.

With the judgment now delivered, he believes the moment is right to activate those commitments.

In his words:

“We reached an understanding a long time ago, but we agreed that the court should finish its work first. Now that the judgement has been delivered, we have activated the agreed steps.”

He noted that the approach for Kanu’s release was rooted in dialogue and diplomacy, not confrontation.

Otti recalled that as far back as 2017, he advised against violent raids on Kanu’s home, insisting that the matter required wisdom and political engagement rather than force.

Otti also confirmed that he is not working alone. Governors across the South-East are aligned with the plan, holding channels of communication with federal authorities to ensure that the region’s concerns are addressed through peaceful negotiation.

Otti explained that the regional leaders are committed to preventing the issue from being politicized or turned into a tool for partisan attacks.

He cautioned political actors against exploiting the sensitive matter for selfish gains.

Appeal for Calm in the South-East

The governor urged residents of Abia and neighbouring states to remain calm and allow the diplomatic process to advance.

He acknowledged the pain and tension that followed Kanu’s life sentence but warned that hostile actions or inflammatory statements could complicate ongoing engagements.

He emphasized that what is required now is patience, unity, and restraint, assuring the public that meaningful progress is being made.

Analysts say Otti’s intervention may signal a turning point in efforts to stabilize the South-East, where agitation, insecurity, and political tension have been dominant themes since Kanu’s detention.

A successful diplomatic settlement could reshape regional politics and reduce tensions that have persisted for years.

According to political observers, the governor’s calm and strategic approach could influence national consensus on the need for a political solution rather than prolonged imprisonment.

Governor Otti expressed optimism about the outcome of the renewed push, stating:

“With the assurances we have received from those involved, I am confident that freedom is in sight for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

For millions of supporters across the South-East and the diaspora, hope has been reignited  and all eyes are now on the federal government’s next move.
