The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a three-day weather outlook predicting widespread thunderstorms and rainfall activities across the country from Monday, June 24 to Wednesday, June 26, 2025.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet advised the public, especially those in storm-prone areas, to prepare for strong winds, reduced visibility, and possible flooding, and to take necessary safety precautions.
Northern Region: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Expected
For Monday, early morning thunderstorms are expected in Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna, while other northern states will experience sunny skies with intermittent cloud cover. In the afternoon and evening, widespread thunderstorms and rain are expected to affect Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, Gombe, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna.
By Tuesday, NiMet forecasts scattered thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Kaduna in the morning, with light rains and storms likely across many northern states by evening.
On Wednesday, morning thunderstorms are expected in Zamfara, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, and Sokoto, followed by heavy rainfall in the afternoon and evening in Taraba, Adamawa, and other northern parts.
Central Region: Cloudy Mornings and Afternoon Thunderstorms – Nimet
In the central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, and Plateau, Monday will begin with isolated morning showers, followed by afternoon thunderstorms in Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, and surrounding areas.
By Tuesday, areas such as Benue, Kogi, and the FCT are expected to experience light morning rains, with thunderstorms and showers persisting into the evening in most parts of the region.
On Wednesday, cloudy conditions will dominate the morning, transitioning to moderate thunderstorms and rainfall later in the day.
Southern Region: Persistent Light Rains and Isolated Thunderstorms
For the southern states, NiMet predicts cloudy mornings with light rains in Ogun, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom on Monday. Thunderstorms and light rains will occur in the afternoon in Edo, Delta, Imo, Enugu, Rivers, Bayelsa, and other states.
This pattern is expected to continue on Tuesday and Wednesday, with widespread light rain across the region throughout both days.
NiMet Issues Safety Advisory
NiMet cautioned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms, urging residents to fasten loose objects and avoid sheltering under trees during storms.
“Driving under heavy rain should be avoided and electrical appliances disconnected from sockets,” the agency warned.
Additionally, airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific forecasts from NiMet to ensure safe and effective flight planning during the period.
