Kolu: From Abuja Struggles to GFM Fame — The Journey of Nigeria’s Rising Comedian

Young Hamzat  better known by his stage name Kolu  grew up as the firstborn in a family of ten. In a heartfelt interview shared online, he revealed that his mother passed away a long time ago and that his father remarried.

“They call me Kolu wahala. I’m 32 years old, and I’m the firstborn of my family. We are 10,” he said.

That early loss and large household forced him to fight for survival; he moved to Abuja in search of a better chance and support. The years were tough and full of uncertainty, but they shaped his resilience and steering spirit.

Move to Lagos, GFM Network and Breakthrough

Kolu’s fortunes began to turn when he relocated to Lagos, the entertainment nerve-centre of Nigeria. According to his account, it was fellow entertainer Portable who originally brought him from Abuja to Lagos. From there, he lived under Portable’s roof for a while, hoping to catch a break.

However, as often comes with those shared struggles, the arrangement didn’t last. Kolu eventually parted ways with Portable, and it was through another entertainer, Carter Efe, that things changed.

Carter signed him, introduced him into the fold of what fans now know as the “GFM family,” and played a crucial role in his rise to popularity. “He made me blow,” Kolu admitted in that candid interview.

“God bless him. From there, I started making money.”

He further explained that once he started earning, he was given financial support  a friend reportedly sent him ₦1 million and Carter advised him to rent a house. That, he said, marked the shift from decade-long struggle to hope and stability.

Struggles, Skepticism and Questions About His Age

Despite newfound success, Kolu’s journey hasn’t been without scrutiny. Recently, some netizens expressed disbelief when a post on social media claimed that Kolu turned 40.

In response, Kolu’s earlier interview resurfaced, where he confidently claimed to be 32  placing his latest birthday at 33. “I said I’m 32 years old,” he insisted, insisting that the birthday post was just celebratory and didn’t reflect any real age reveal.

Age aside, the main narrative remains his climb: from a boy hungry for hope, to a comedian making waves in a competitive industry.

What GFM Family Means for Him

For Kolu, being part of the GFM fold didn’t just mean fame  it meant a lifeline. The exposure, the collaborations, and the support system gave him a platform to re-invent himself.

His raw personality and chemistry  especially in livestreams and skits alongside other GFM members  have resonated with admirers who appreciate authenticity over polish.

He often speaks frankly about where he came from: a large family, no mother, early hustle, survival instincts  all fuel for a unique voice in the comedy world. That voice, once silenced by hardship, now commands attention across social media.

From the pain of loss and early responsibility to the bright lights of Lagos and the backing of GFM, Kolu’s story is a testament to grit and reinvention. As he put it himself:

“God bless him [Carter Efe]… from there, I started making money.”

His journey  marked by struggle, controversy, and ultimate triumph  stands as inspiration for many hustlers dreaming of a breakthrough. And if his rising influence is anything to go by, Kolu’s “wahala” may just be the beginning of a lasting legacy.
