Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has left the door open to a possible exit after his side crashed out of the UEFA Champions League, suffering a heavy aggregate defeat to Arsenal in the quarter-finals.
The Italian manager witnessed a 2-1 loss at home on Wednesday night, sealing a 5-1 aggregate win for the Gunners and dashing Madrid’s hopes of European glory. The defeat marks Los Blancos’ 12th of the current season , a sharp contrast to just two losses in the entire previous campaign.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Ancelotti said he was unbothered by his contract situation and admitted that a managerial change could be on the cards.
“It could be that the club decide to change (coach), it could be this year, or the next when my contract expires, there’s no problem,” Ancelotti said.
“The day that I leave here I can only thank the club. It could be tomorrow, in 10 days, in a month or a year, I don’t care.”
Despite the Champions League disappointment, the Madrid boss pointed out that the team is still in contention for La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Club World Cup this summer.
Ancelotti’s future remains uncertain, especially with reports linking Real Madrid to Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso and former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
“The team gave everything in terms of attitude, but we weren’t able to do it,” Ancelotti concluded.
