Is Donald Trump Acting on Christian-Killings in Nigeria or After Its Resource Wealth?

U.S. President Donald Trump recently ramped up pressure on Nigeria, directing the Pentagon to prepare for potential deployment of U.S. troops or air-strikes over what he characterised as large-scale killings of Christians in Africa’s most populous nation.

Alongside this threat, the United States re-designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” for alleged violations of religious freedom. According to  ABC News

Nigeria has rejected the narrative of targeted Christian genocide, with officials insisting the violence affects citizens of all faiths and is rooted in complex insurgency, land-use and ethnic conflicts.

“We are not proud of the security situation… but to go with the narrative that only Christians are targeted, no, it is not true”, stated Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs spokesman.

On one hand, Trump frames his posture as a moral and humanitarian mission  one to protect persecuted Christians. But a growing chorus of analysts and media outlets suggest there may be deeper strategic interests at play.

For instance, a report from Euronews argues that Nigeria’s unexplored reserves of lithium, nickel, cobalt, and other “rare earth” minerals raise the possibility that U.S. concerns are not purely about religion.

Nigeria’s territory is increasingly noted for deposits of these critical minerals used in renewable energy, defence manufacturing and electric vehicles  sectors that major powers are keen to secure.

The suspicion: could the rhetoric of saving Christians be entwined with the desire to access strategic resources in the country?

Nigeria’s Response to Donald Trump

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his government have adopted a cautious but clear stance: they welcome international assistance against extremist violence provided Nigeria’s territorial integrity and decision-making remain respected.

“We welcome U.S. assistance as long as it recognises our territorial integrity,” said presidential aide Daniel Bwala.

Nigeria emphasises the security situation is multifaceted herders-farmers conflict, Islamist insurgency and criminal banditry cut across religious lines. As one analyst told Al Jazeera:

“There is no credible evidence of a state-led campaign to exterminate Christians.”

The Mineral Angle: Why It Matters

The link between Nigeria’s mineral wealth and foreign-policy interest is not hypothetical.

Several sources point out the northeast and central states of Nigeria host deposits of lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper, lanthanum and neodymium  elements crucial to modern tech and defence.

Thus, while humanitarian concerns are clearly articulated, Nigeria must remain vigilant. The narrative of exposed Christian-killings may provide a convenient entry for deeper geopolitical and resource-driven manoeuvres.

“What Nigeria truly needs is not a foreign saviour,” said human-rights activist Omoyele Sowore. “We need accountable leadership, one that protects all citizens, upholds justice and ends the cycles of corruption and violence.”

For Nigeria, the path ahead is clear: strengthen its institutions, maintain transparent diplomacy and avoid being drawn into frameworks where assistance is tied to hidden strategic interests. Whether Trump’s intentions are purely humanitarian or resource-oriented remains to be seen  but Nigeria cannot afford to treat the matter lightly.
