Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has debunked claims that President Bola Tinubu is using the anti-graft agency to witch-hunt opposition politicians, describing such allegations as baseless distractions.
Speaking on Channels Television, Olukoyede asserted that there is no political interference in the operations of the EFCC, adding that the agency’s records prove otherwise. According to him, more members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are currently facing prosecution than members of the opposition.
“If you check the statistics of our work—investigations, prosecutions, particularly high-profile cases—you will perhaps find more members of the ruling party among those we’ve charged,” he said. “So, for us to ignore individuals just because they are not in the ruling party would be unfair and unjust.”
His remarks come amid controversy following the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and other prominent politicians from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC on April 23. Opposition figures have alleged that state institutions, including the EFCC, are being used to pressure politicians into joining the ruling party.
But Olukoyede dismissed the accusations, insisting that the EFCC’s actions are guided strictly by evidence and the law.
“You will find prominent members of the APC among those we have investigated and charged. The data speaks for itself,” he maintained.
He also praised President Tinubu’s governance style, saying the President prioritizes performance and accountability.
“I think Nigerians should appreciate the kind of President we have at this time. Those who work closely with him know he’s constantly asking: ‘What have you done? How much have you recovered?’ He doesn’t have time for political games,”Olukoyede said.
