The Chief Press Secretary to the Delta State Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, has refuted claims that former Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ifeanyi Okowa, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to avoid investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Speaking during an interview on Yanga FM’s programme, Wetin Dey Happen, Mr Ahon described the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. He expressed confidence that Mr Okowa would be cleared of any wrongdoing.
Mr Ahon explained that the decision to defect was taken after extensive consultations with party leaders and stakeholders, stressing that it was aimed at securing greater development opportunities for Delta State by aligning with the federal government.
“In politics, there are no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests,” he said. “After wide consultations, it was a collective decision by Delta PDP leaders to move to the APC for the benefit of the state.”
He emphasized that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, known for his strong grassroots support, did not act unilaterally in the move. According to him, the defection is expected to attract more federal projects and attention to Delta.
Mr Ahon also urged Deltans to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration in Abuja and Governor Oborevwori’s administration in Asaba for the overall development of the state.
Globalhints had earlier reported that Governor Oborevwori, alongside Mr Okowa and the Delta PDP structure, defected to the APC.
