Bandits Attack Gatawa Community in Sokoto, Several Feared Dead and Others Taken Away

Residents of Gatawa community in Sabon-Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State were thrown into distress after armed groups entered the area late Saturday night.

According to a community member , the attackers

“entered the village suddenly and people began running in different directions for safety.”

The source added that local vigilante members tried to respond, but the attackers were heavily armed.

Early reports indicate that at least five people lost their lives, with a sixth person confirmed dead hours after sustaining injuries. Politics Nigeria also reported similar casualty figures, noting that the situation left families in emotional distress and uncertainty.

Beyond the casualties, several residents were taken away during the attack. Those abducted reportedly include women, teenagers, and young boys.

A resident told Politics Nigeria that the attackers also took livestock and other valuables, leaving affected households worried and unsure of the next steps.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement, but community members say search efforts are ongoing.

The incident adds to a string of recent attacks around Sokoto State. Earlier in the week, a separate community reported an attack at a local mosque during early-morning prayers, which led to the loss of two lives and several worshippers being taken away.

Reports also show that repeated insecurity incidents have forced some communities in Sokoto to stage protests, calling for more proactive measures from security agencies and improved protection for rural settlement

Security analysts and local leaders continue to stress the need for stronger security presence in vulnerable areas.

They note that regular patrols, community policing support, and improved intelligence gathering are necessary steps to prevent further attacks.

Residents say the situation has affected farming activities, local businesses, and overall community confidence. One villager expressed his frustration in an earlier protest, stating,

“We only want a safe environment where we can live and work without fear.”

The attack on Gatawa highlights ongoing security challenges in Sokoto and underscores the urgent need for longterm solutions.

While authorities work to address the latest incident, residents hope for a future where rural communities can return to normal life without recurring threats.

As one community elder summarized: “People are anxious, but we are hopeful that stronger action will bring stability and peace back to our villages.”
