In a significant move that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar met with ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai on Tuesday evening in Abuja, signalling a new phase in opposition coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku, a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was accompanied by Alhaji Musa Halilu (Dujima Adamawa) during the closed-door meeting at El-Rufai’s residence. The visit is the latest in a series of consultations involving high-profile political actors, including Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
Though official details remain undisclosed, sources close to both camps described the meeting as “strategic” and “forward-looking,” with discussions reportedly focused on forging a united opposition front to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s anticipated re-election bid.
El-Rufai, who has previously spoken openly about coalition efforts, stated: “The objective of the coalition would be to ensure that President Bola Tinubu loses his bid for re-election in the 2027 presidential election.”
Atiku has consistently called for a stronger, more cohesive opposition in light of growing public dissatisfaction over economic and security issues under the current administration.
While no formal alliance has been confirmed, the meeting has intensified speculation about a potential political bloc that could merge Atiku’s national influence with El-Rufai’s cross-party reach—especially if talks with other key figures like Obi progress.
