The average cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Nigeria rose to ₦20,709.11 in May 2025, reflecting a 2.18% month-on-month increase from the ₦20,268.06 recorded in April.
This is according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which released its LPG Price Watch for May 2025 on Wednesday.
The data also revealed a sharp year-on-year rise of 32%, compared to the average price of ₦15,627.40 paid in May 2024—further highlighting the deepening impact of inflation on essential household commodities.
States with highest and lowest Gas Prices
According to the NBS report, Delta, Abia, and Ebonyi states recorded the highest average prices for refilling a 12.5kg gas cylinder:
Delta – ₦23,356.56
Abia – ₦22,953.01
Ebonyi – ₦22,943.30
On the other end of the scale, Yobe, Lagos, and Kebbi states recorded the lowest refill costs:
Yobe – ₦18,500.00
Lagos – ₦18,536.00
Kebbi – ₦18,606.60
The NBS has yet to release its June 2025 LPG Price Watch, but analysts anticipate continued price pressure amid persistent economic headwinds, including fluctuations in global energy markets and foreign exchange instability.
Rising cooking gas prices have continued to strain household budgets, especially for low- and middle-income Nigerians. Stakeholders in the gas value chain have repeatedly called for policy interventions and infrastructural investment to stabilize supply and encourage local production.
As the nation grapples with energy challenges, these figures provide a stark reminder of the increasing cost of living and the urgent need for sustainable energy policies.
