As political permutations intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election, former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Sam Amadi, has voiced his concern over the treatment of Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP).
Amadi shared his views in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, highlighting what he described as a double standard in how some political actors and supporters are engaging with Obi’s political future.
Peter Obi Under Pressure to Accept VP Role
The post comes amid growing division within Obi’s support base, particularly over speculation that the former Anambra State governor may be asked to deputize former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the next election.
While no official alliance has been announced, the possibility of a PDP–LP coalition has triggered fierce debate online and within both parties’ ranks.
Amadi: “If He Refuses, They Call Him Selfish”
Dr. Amadi criticised what he sees as opportunism by some political figures who only support Obi for their own electoral gains.
“The problem with @PeterObi is that some people just want him to help them win elections. If he does not say ‘I will be vice president to Atiku,’ then he is selfish. They abuse him,” Amadi wrote.
He contrasted those sentiments with the stance of committed Obi supporters who remain steadfast in backing him for President, not as a running mate.
“But real supporters of Obi want him to be President. Which side u de?”
Peter Obi yet to declare 2027 Intention
Peter Obi has not officially declared his intention to run for president again in 2027, nor has he confirmed any discussions regarding forming a political alliance or accepting a vice presidential slot. However, analysts believe his decision could significantly impact the political landscape, especially as both PDP and Labour Party consider potential strategies to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
